Berrien Springs, Mich. (March 26, 2012) — When Robert Rudell attended the 22nd annual Fort Wayne Farm Show, he didn’t expect his attendance to benefit agricultural education. That all changed when Rudell entered a raffle drawing at the Brodbeck Seeds booth and was selected to direct a $250 donation to support agricultural education and leadership. He promptly selected Countryside Academy FFA of Benton Harbor as the recipient of the donation and coupled it with a personal matching donation. The combined $500 contribution will support Countryside Academy’s participation in the state FFA convention later this year.
Rudell was one of six attendees at the Fort Wayne Farm Show to be selected to direct an agricultural education donation from Brodbeck Seeds. Rudell believes that FFA plays an important role in preparing young people for the demands of 21st century agriculture. He participated in FFA during his freshman and sophomore years of high school, but noted that FFA was not available his junior and senior years due to a lack of funding.
Rudell said that today’s farmers and agribusiness companies share a responsibility to educate the next generation of leaders. “We need young people to appreciate the role that farmers play in feeding a growing population not just here, but around the world. Many people today don’t understand where their food comes from,” Rudell said.
Brodbeck Seeds District Sales Manager Larry Ashbaugh added that farmers serve as role models for youth who aspire to be farmers. “Through their involvement with FFA, farmers provide valuable insight and expertise on the business of farming. Brodbeck Seeds is committed to helping our customers support FFA and the next generation of ag leaders,” Ashbaugh added.
